Contents

The teacher panel from a 2001 Education Workshop for Scientists.

Introduction

Spend three days in beautiful Boulder, Colorado! This workshop offers participants the tools necessary to design and implement effective, standards-based workshops for formal and informal educators working in:

  • Schools
  • Museums and planetaria
  • Youth programs
  • Nature centers and outdoor programs
  • Professional societies

Who Should Attend

Scientists and Education & Public Outreach (EPO) managers in space and earth science who:

  • Have some experience developing workshops for educators.
  • Are based at universities, NASA centers and flight projects, research institutions, and government agencies.
  • Are familiar with the National Science Education Standards.

Educators interested in working with scientists and EPO managers to develop high-quality workshops on space and earth science topics.

Participants are also strongly encouraged to apply in teams of two from each organization. Experience shows a greater impact and more effective post-workshop implementation of best practices when colleagues can attend the workshop together. Please consider bringing a colleague!

What This Workshop Can Do For You

  • Deepens your knowledge about how to design professional development experiences for educators that meet real educational needs and are consistent with science education reform.
  • Creates opportunities for networking with educators and other scientists engaged in the professional development of science educators.
  • Provides an opportunity to review your existing professional development programs and generate ideas for how to strengthen and improve them.

We will ask participants to elaborate on their professional development (PD) prior experience in the application process. We will also request that participants bring an actual or proposed PD agenda to the workshop for critiquing purposes.

  • Day 2: A Framework for Designing Professional Development for Teachers of Science (as devised by Susan Loucks-Horsley and colleagues)
  • Day 3: Applying Best Practices to Your Work as a Professional Developer of Educators
  • A reception/participant poster session on the evening of Day 2
  • This workshop is being designed in collaboration with the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study's (BSCS) SCI program, renowned experts in providing professional development for professional developers of science teachers.
